Overview
The microbiome, consisting of microorganisms in hosts like fish and their environments, is vital for ecosystem health and biodiversity. It influences digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity, and reproduction. This project will investigate the relationships among environmental factors, fish gut microbiomes, and physiological traits in trout perch and bass over two years. Data will be collected by sampling fish from different lakes, measuring physiological traits, and analyzing gut microbiomes through DNA sequencing. In Phase 1) we will use mathematical models to assess how environmental factors influence gut microbiome data, considering spatial and temporal variations. Phase 2) will examine the link between gut microbiomes and physiological traits, identifying key bacteria associated with these traits. In Phase 3) we will explore how environmental factors affect fish traits using a regularized mixture regression model to account for variations across sampling locations.
